Code Word

Grade: Primary, Junior
Facility: gymnasium, multipurpose room or outdoors
Materials: Frisbees

Activity Description: Playing Code Word encourages students to work together while being physically active.  This is a great way to get students energized in a large space, gymnasium or multipurpose room.

Overview:

  • Divide the gymnasium and the class in half with one group on one side and one group on the other.
  • Each team chooses a code word (e.g., “rain” and “sun”)
  • Scatter Frisbees on both sides of the gymnasium and on the signal both teams start throwing the Frisbees towards the opposing groups’ side.
  • If a player catches a Frisbee thrown by an opponent they call out their code word and throw it back.
  • If they try to catch it and drop it they kneel on one knee. The kneeling students stand again when someone on their team catches a Frisbee without dropping it and calls out their team’s code word.
  • Encourage students to call out their team’s code word loudly, every time they catch a Frisbee. The students work together with their team so that no one is kneeling for a long time.
  • Remind students to play fairly and kneel when they drop the Frisbee. No student should be kneeling for long.
  • Play the game indoors with foam Frisbees. If playing outside, establish a zone in between both teams’ sides where no player can go.
